How productive is your office design 21/07/2005
Businesses can greatly improve their staff productivity with better office design, suggests a new report highlighted on businesseurope.com Research from consultancy firm Gensler shows that improving work environments can boost staff morale and drive up productivity by nearly a fifth, adding up to £135 billion to firms' bottom lines.

The study of service sector businesses reveals a fifth of workers claim they would be embarrassed to show their office to a customer. Another 58% say it has not been designed to support their firm's business objectives, let alone their job function.

Only half rate their working environment as above average. Business owners are failing to realise, said Gensler's Gary Wheeler, that a comfortable working environment indirectly leads to more money in their coffers. Poof office design, he said, is a false economy.

SME's pay hefty bank fees 21/07/2005
It has been reported that small businesses are paying more than £65 million in bank charges each year.

New research from The Co-operative Bank shows that fees for depositing cash over the counter, limits on cash and cheque deposits, overdrafts and other transaction charges mean small firms could be paying more than £65 million unnecessarily to their bank.

Some 40% of bosses surveyed said that uncertainty and confusion surrounding bank charges is one of the biggest problems they encounter.

"Small business owners have enough day-to-day problems to deal with without having to worry about costly bank account charges," said Sheila Macdonald, chief operating officer at The Co-operative Bank.

Dare you enter the Dragons den? 07/07/2005
The second series of Dragons' Den, the popular BBC series where budding entrepreneurs pitch for funding from a panel of wealthy and successful business people, is seeking cogent business ideas, inventions or products that are investment-ready.

BBC Economics Editor Evan Davis will present the show from a secret location in London, where each week a new selection of entrepreneurs will have the opportunity to pitch their ideas to the Dragons.

Each participant can ask for any specified amount of funding for their idea or product, but if the pitcher cannot convince one or more of the Dragons to match that specified amount, the entrepreneur walks away empty.

Even if the Dragons pledge an amount of money smaller than the amount asked for, the entrepreneurs still walk away with nothing.

Each entrepreneur is free to bargain in order to get their specified amount, which usually comes in exchange for shares in their company.

The BBC will hold auditions for contestants throughout the coming months.

Avaya Kick Off 01/07/2005
In a dress rehearsal for the FIFA Word Cup 2006 in Germany Avaya has successfully road tested their converged IP communications systems that underpin the entire event. Comms Business Magazine was invited to see their IT command centre based at the new Frankfurt stadium, one of the main venues for next years’ competition. Avaya has installed a wide range of applications that stretch across all six stadiums involved and together with partners Extreme Networks and Deutche Telecom will ensure FIFA officials and visiting journalists have up to date information at their fingertips. Speaking to Comms Business Magazine, Avaya CEO Don Peterson said, “Avaya is among the world leaders in IP telephony and plans to move ahead in 2006. IP telephony started as a cost reduction benefit for organisations but is now progressing through business applications deployment to deliver both business and market transformation.” Avaya say their worldwide market share of IP telephony reached 24% in 2004. A new joint venture with Nokia to put Avaya IP telephony functionality on to the Finnish vendors handsets so that these applications can be used on one phone in and out of the office. Since 2001, the overall cost to Avaya of sponsorship and providing the communications for both the 2002 and 2006 World Cups is a staggering $100 million but the vendor will see a return in terms of increased credibility in the converged market having achieved a five nines reliability for their network and successfully keeping out virus’s and hackers.
