Would be entrepreneurs fail to act on impulse 29/03/2005
A survey by the East of England Development Agency (EEDA) shows that while the UK is fertile ground for business brains, many are unable or unwilling to take their ideas forward.

Just under three-quarters of respondents admitted to only recording ideas in their head, while 43% went as far as telling someone else and a mere 13% committed pen to paper. As a result, 23% of male respondents said their idea was seized upon and exploited by someone else. The same was said by 16% of female respondents.

Charles Kitchin, regional marketing manager for the EEDA, said: "With innovation being heralded as the new currency for business success, these statistics should cause concern to the business community. "It is clear that people have the ability to come up with great ideas, but they are not being helped or encouraged to capitalise on them."

However, earlier research shows that thousands of people in the UK are acting on ideas. Figures contained in this years' global entrepreneurship monitor show that 6.3% of working adults were involved in a business venture.

Commenting on today's figures, Mike Southern, co-author of 'The Beermat Entrepreneur', said: "People have business ideas every day without realising it. What sets the entrepreneur apart is that they acknowledge their ideas and then put them into practice.

SMEs turn to debt factoring 29/03/2005
According to data from the Factoring and Discounting Association (FDA), the number of firms using the service increased by 11% during the 2004, compared to the previous 12 months.

Some 39,895 companies turned to debt factors, which buy invoices from businesses and allow them to draw loans against the money owed, as an alternative to more traditional funding options. SMEs accounted for 94%. The factoring sector is now worth £132 billion and is most popular among manufacturers. Some 12,500 used it during 2004 to improve cashflow or cut back on administrative overheads.

Separately, FDA also found the problem of late payment had worsened in the UK. Businesses using invoice discounting and factoring complained customers were taking longer to pay than they did in 2003. The average number of debtor days increased from 57 days in 2003 to 60 days in 2004.

Kate Sharp, FDA chief executive, said: "What is very encouraging is that more and more SMEs see the benefit of using innovative funding solutions to inject cash into their business. "However, it is worrying that the UK late payment culture has worsened and the introduction of late payment legislation has failed to improve payment terms."

Regulation forces up IT cost 19/03/2005
The Times Online has recently reported that almost half of British businesses believe their IT costs have increased over the past two years as a direct result of complying with mounting legislation.

A survey, commissioned by Dell, found that one-third of businesses have had to invest in new technology simply to meet compliance demands, with more than half of respondents saying that they do not expect to see any return on the investment. On average, over one-tenth of the annual technology budget is spent complying with legislation

Cyber slackers waste an hour a day 08/03/2005
Almost 40 per cent of workers spend an hour or more every day e-mailing their friends and relatives during working hours, according to research. And the survey of 4,500 employees conducted by Clearswift found that three-quarters of people believe their boss would be "unconcerned" if he or she knew about this time wasting. Only one in ten workers claims never to use the company e-mail system for personal purposes.

Clamp down on parking penalties 04/03/2005
It is now a criminal offence to immobilise, block in, or tow away a vehicle left on your business premises and then charge a fee for its release, unless you hold a valid licence from the Security Industry Authority (SIA). The new rules came into affect on Monday, February 28, and failure to comply could lead to a hefty fine or a prison sentence. To apply for a licence or obtain a register of licensed firms, contact the SIA on 08702 430100

Minimum wage to rise above £5 04/03/2005
The national minimum wage for adults will go up to £5.05 an hour from October and to £5.35 the following year, the Government has announced. The rate for 18 to 21-year-olds will also go up 15p to £4.25, but the rate for 16 to 17-year-olds will stay at £3 with the next review due in February 2006. The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) warned that increases in the minimum wage must not become a rubber-stamping exercise. "Continuous year-on-year above inflation increases in the rate are dangerous for the economy and send the wrong message to employers," Alan Tyrell, the FSB's Employment Chairman, said.
